Making this your best 5K run/fun walk ever!

August 16, 2010

Hello everyone who has signed up for the Run/Walk to Milwaukee Irish Fest (or who still wants to sign up – online through Wednesday or on the day of the event). Here are a few helpful tips to make this an enjoyable run/walk. Most of these tips are also useful for other races, so you should sign up now for the Jingle Bell Run/Walk!

From parking to sunscreen, here we go:

1. Pick up your race packet on Thursday between 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. By getting your packed ahead of time, you save yourself time on the morning of race day.

2. If you choose to run and have a timing chip, YOU MUST BRING YOUR RACE NUMBER TO THE EVENT. Head over to the chip timing table to pick up your chip.

3. The closest parking structure, O’Donnell Park, is closed. You can find parking at these nearby locations. There is also street parking a short distance away.

4. Make sure and wear sunscreen. There are not a lot of shady spaces at the North Gate of the Milwaukee Irish Fest grounds.

5. Bring water with you. There are two water stops on the route and water at the end of the race, but if you need a drink before hand, you’ll have to bring it with you.
5a. You should probably go to the bathroom BEFORE you leave home and drink all that water! Bathrooms are open for a short time before the race.

6. Go to the wristband table so that a volunteer can put a wristband on you so that you get into Milwaukee Irish Fest for FREE that afternoon.

7. When lining up for the race, remember this simple phrase: Runners to the front; Walkers at the rear. This is for your safety. Runners need to take off and we don’t want anyone to get stepped on or knocked over. This is especially true if you are walking with a child or a stroller (yes, you can bring a stroller). Runners to the front; Walkers at the rear.

8. Don’t turn up your headphones too loud. You might miss important instructions from staff or volunteers. Be courteous for a safe finish!

9. At the end of the race, be sure and run over the timing pad on the ground if you have a timing chip. Then head over to the food lines for a snack and some water.

10. The results will be posted as fast as they can be accurately counted. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

Start your journey to the end of the rainbow!

Up and Running!

We’re not just talking about people who are moving to fight their arthritis pain; we’re talking about the online registration for the Run/Walk to Milwaukee Irish Fest!

That’s right, you can start building your team and getting your green gear ready to run along Milwaukee’s beautiful lakefront on August 21. The race begins and ends at the north gate of the Henry W. Meier Festival Grounds (Irish Fest). The event features pre-race stretching, chip timing for runners, and a post-race celebration and awards ceremony.

While you’re out having a beer, or a few, this St. Patrick’s Day, be sure and round up your friends for a team and register for the Run/Walk to Milwaukee Irish Fest to benefit the 1.1 million men, women and children who have arthritis in Wisconsin. Your help is their pot of gold and that’s no blarney!
